The Classic Car to Compliment Classic Style

Today's topic is the car you drive.

Now everyone knows that cars are not always a personal choice, however if you are a fortunate
person that has no need for a four wheel drive or a station wagon, then maybe you should look at
a classic sportscar.

There are a plethora of them out there, from MG's to Datsun Z's to Ferrari's and Porsches. Fact of
the matter is that no-one really cares how much money you have, they care about what you do
with it and how you spend it.

That is a fact - never underestimate how deeply people will judge you. If you see a 50 year old
man in a Dutsun 120Y, what do you think? Even worse, what about the kid in the 911 with P
plates?

A car is a way that a man (yes, and women - but not as passionately) can define himself. A car is
the way a man says to the people in his world "here I am".

Now Ihave wasted a lot of money on cars in my lifetime, however there was one that I loved. My
Nissan 280ZX Targa. Taking 70's and 80's complete lack of design principle and turning them into a car that, I think, defined me in my twenties.

I loved this car, and I think that is the main thing. I loved the history of the breed, the sleek looks,
the speed, the cross between classic and modern style, the fact that the roof came off!

I used to know this American girl, from Detroit, who used to get in and, whether it was sunny or
raining, would ask me to "get out the T-top".

Now being a Japenese car, this thing didn't cost a lot of money and it didn't cost a lot to run
either. I had a choice between a colt and this. If you have ever seen To Wong Foo, Thanks for
Everything, Julie Newmar then you will have some insight into how easily that decision was made
- minus the drag queens.

This becons the question. Why don't more people buy these beasts? Surely they don't see a
corolla and say "Wow! That's the car I always wanted!"

Fact of the matter is that many people have responsibilities that involve needing a practical car
rather than the car they really want. My dad is 52 and just bought his first Porsche. I must say,
after a drive the other night, the Cayman S is truly a drivers car.

But the point that I am getting to is that men, in all stages of their lives, will see a car and say "that
is me" and that is what I am talking about here.

What car is you?

Do you like muscle? Do you like cornering? You like body-kits, or round headlights? Do you like
convertibles and targa tops?

What do you like?

Here are some classics of era's past that may help you find out.

Bottom end price:
Mazda MX5 - $10-25k

This is a great car for the driving enthusiast that has a small budget. From about $10k you can get
into this front engine rear wheel drive machine in a variety of colours.

The MX5 is not powerful, however boasts incredible handling and feel for the driver. Plus - chicks
dig convertibles and something as simple as this is just going to drive the girls wild.

The interior is nice and simple and you have to remember - be it an MX5 or a Mercedes 500SL, the
experience with the top down is exactly the same. As soon as the roof goes down you are subject
to the elements, so the question beckons - is it worth spending a fortune on something that is
going to give you the same experience?

Classic Best Buy: MGB GT - $15-25k

The same reasoning as previously mentioned is not my excuse for introducing you to the hard top
that very few loved. I say that because everyone goes out and buys an MGB convertible and
things that this makes them incredibly individual. It doesn't - it just means that you have no
imagination.

The MGB GT is one of those cars, like the Datsun 240Z that doesn't need to take its top off to be
popular. Look at models like Denise Milani and you will see what I mean by this - you won't find any naked photos of her on the web. Like the MGB GT, her beauty and grace are enough when she
has her top on. Denise Milani: Image Source Star Media

This is the original of it's species in todays terms. Everyone knows that MG's rock, however you
can be a bit more creative and go for something like this rather than jumping on the bandwagon
with every other MG driver and buying the topless one.

Got some money? The ultimate in classic sportsmanship: Triumph TR6! $30k'ish

These things are stunning and many older blokes race them because they have the potential for
some serious power. Hiding a 2.5L in-line six under the bonnet, they weren't like todays engines,
but this little bath-tub could kick a Mirage to 100kph. Stunning and race bred, this is something
that a man buys for himself, even when his wife liked BMW at the other car yard. Not as pretty as
an MG, not as practical as a 280zx and not as new as an MX5 - this is what someone with passion
buys. If you are passionate about cars and haven't driven one of these yet, then take one for a test
drive.

Performance at a good price: Porsche 911 1967-8: $30k+

Image Source: http://imcdb.org When a girl asks you what car you drive, how do you feel when you say a Toyota, or a minivan?

Imagine the feeling of saying "A Porsche". History has proven that Porsches make girls clothing fly
off their bodies, exposing bits that 5 minutes earlier they didn't know they had (well maybe not, but suspend your disbelief). This is the non-wanker's Porsche 911. We all
remember the stock brokers in the '80's with their Red Porsche Turbo's; massive whale tails
flapping the wind and obnoxiously loud exhaust systems capitalising on the air-cooled engines
which symbolised German engineering at the time. This was pre stock-brokers. This car was
being driven by movie stars and race car drivers before the stockbrokers of the 80's were born.
I don't need to say anything about the performance of the 911; we all know the engineering is
backward and they are incredibly fast and handle very well. Factof the matter is that, instead of
buying something new for $35k, you could live the dream. So think about it.

Sheer unadulterated beauty: The most beautiful car on Earth: Jag E-Type: $60k+

If people thought that Porsches made girls take their clothes off, then I would love to see what happens when you rock up to a party in one of these! My bet is they would take their clothes off, call all of their friends and have pillow fights and practice kissing in the car park right where you sit. Sitting in the driver's seat, you're sure to get an invite too.

This car is like an old wine - the more time moves on, the more beautiful the E-Type seems to be.
V12 monster engine, 2 seats and choice of convertible and hard top. This is
one that looks a lot better with her top off.

Got some serious cash? Want an awesome car for about $140k? Don't want to be just another BMW driver?
Ferrari Testerossa 1987

* Performance - tick
* Beauty - tick
* Street Cred - tick
* Pride of ownership - tick
* Ferrari Red - tick
* Enough room for a shag on the bonnet - tick
* Girls will actually want to shag you on the bonnet - tick tick
* Doesn't need to be modified - tick
This baby has it all. Yeah, for the same price you can buy a brand new Boxster, but what's the fun
in that? In Perth there seems to be a million Boxster drivers, and you still have a good
rubberneckin' moment whenever a Ferrari scoots by.

So when you are in the market, and want something different, you don't need to spend a fortune.
Just get onto some research and find the one that is right for you. Be it $1,500 or $150,000 there is
an individual classic for everyone.
